The rivalry between Davenport Assumption and Williamsburg will add another chapter after the Knights handled Dubuque Wahlert here Wednesday in a Class 3A semifinal, 7-5.

No. 2 Davenport Assumption (34-6 overall) and the top-ranked Raiders (35-9) will meet for the title on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Rogers Park on Kruger Seeds Field. Last year, Assumption knocked off Williamsburg in the semis on its way to placing second to Mount Vernon.

The Golden Eagles put a bit of a scare into Assumption fans in the seventh with a three-run homer off the bat of Julia Roth. Leah Maro, though, settled down to get the final outs and secure the win.

“We talk all the time about those insurance runs and just how important they are,” Assumption head coach Tyler Edwards said. “We knew they were a power-hitting team and might send one out eventually.”

Callie Miller was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs and an RBI for the Knights, while Jessie Warlow, Isabella Krogman and Bella Stoffregen each drove in a run. Abby Odean had two hits including a double.

“We have incredible senior leadership,” Edwards said. “Those girls have been here and done that. They are the calm that gets us through tough situations.

“Nothing is every easy, but it’s definitely fun with them.”

The Knights are seeking their fifth state title in eight appearances and are in the finals for the sixth time during that streak.

No. 3 Dubuque Wahlert (32-9) will play fifth-rated Estherville-Lincoln Central (32-4) for third at 1 p.m. Friday on Iowa Central Field. Roth broke the school record with her homer after tying it on Tuesday.

Tierani Teslow, Ruth Tauber, Anna Roling and Kylie Sieverding each had two hits for Wahlert.
