Blomgren fans 15 in Van Meter win

On paper, it almost seems like Macy Blomgren was a one-player show in Van Meter’s 6-1 state quarterfinal victory over Missouri Valley on Tuesday.

The senior DMACC recruit dominated in the pitcher’s circle, striking out 15 batters and allowing only four hits.

While it’s true Blomgren was the star on Kruger Seeds Field, she wanted nothing to do with the idea that her act was a solo one in front of a large crowd of Class 2A fans.

“I can’t just get every out (as a pitcher),” Blomgren said. “The defense was great behind me (with just one error compared to four by Missouri Valley), and our offense just doesn’t quit. Knowing I have that kind of offense (as support) is exactly what you want.”

The Bulldogs (35-5 overall) have averaged nearly nine runs per game this season. That kind of firepower just makes Blomgren — now 9-0 with an ERA hovering around 0.70 — all the more effective.

Lauren Wallace homered and had two hits for second-seeded Van Meter, which has now won 13 consecutive contests. Five different Bulldogs knocked in runs, and the team stole eight bases — including two each by Maddie Waldorf and Finley Netten.

Blomgren did the rest.

“Last year, we lost (in the quarterfinals) to the eventual champs,” Blomgren said. “It’s good to get that first one. It takes some of the weight off our shoulders and the pressure off.

“Knowing we have two games left no matter what is nice. But we want to get (to the finals).”

Van Meter now meets No. 3 seed Central Springs (26-5) on Wednesday with a spot in the championship on the line. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. on Iowa Central Field.

Missouri Valley (29-4) faces West Monona (29-7) in a 2A consolation contest at 1 p.m. Wednesday on Dodger Field.
