Eagles win with late TD

EAGLE GROVE — Eagle Grove used a balanced scoring attack to hold off Southeast Valley 27-23 in their season opener on Friday night.

Ryan Smith scored twice for the Eagles (1-0 overall). He caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Lyman. Smith also returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score.

Niko Padilla scored on a 25-yard run and Evan Anderson scored from two yards out. Padilla’s touchdown was the game-winner with 25 seconds left.

Padilla finished with 91 yards on 17 carries and Anderson ran for 93 yards on 17 carries.

Eagle Grove finished with 347 yards of total offense, including 268 rushing, while Southeast Valley had 345.

Junior Kyler Fisher had the big night on the ground for the Jaguars (0-1), running for 109 yards on 18 carries.

He scored on runs of 13 and 27 yards.

Sophomore Hunter Kruse threw a seven-yard scoring strike to Nyles Johnson.

Kruse finished 12-for-15 for 134 yards for the Jaguars.

Titans come up short

CARROLL — South Central had big plays in their season opener, but they didn’t have enough, falling to Carroll 34-24 on Friday night.

Chase McAlister was dominant on offense and defense for the Titans (0-1 overall).

McAlister returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown. He caught a 60-yard strike from Hunter Muhlbauer to go along with a 39-yard scoring catch.

McAlister finished the night with 106 yards on six carries.

Zane Neubaum kicked a 21-yard field goal for the other score.

Josh Henkenius had eight tackles and a 62-yard interception.

Tanner Macke had 10.5 tackles, two for loss and Tyler Jones had seven tackles.

Golden Bears down Indians

POCAHONTAS — Brad Capesius threw four touchdown passes to lead Bishop Garrigan to a 26-12 victory over Pocahontas Area here Friday night.

Capesius tossed two of his passing TDs to TJ Schnurr. The Golden Bears scored all 26 of their points in the first half.

Bishop Garrigan was the Class A state runner-up last year.
