Farmer’s Market Report

The Fort Dodge Farmer’s market has gotten off to a great start this year.

Each week has been busy, even with recent rains. We have seen an increase in customers and also new vendors. There is such a wide variety of things available for purchase.

Of course, the farmer’s market is a great place to get your fresh produce. The vegetable farmers had been selling cooler weather crops like asparagus, rhubarb and kohlrabi. Now that it is warming up, the vendors are able to move into the warmer weather crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, and more.

I know many of you are desperate for sweet corn; I am too. It isn’t quite ready yet, but don’t worry, it’s on the way. With all the rain we have been having, it is sure to be a great crop.

Along with the veggies, there are also microgreens available. Microgreens are young seedlings of vegetables. Some examples would be broccoli, mustard and radishes. Microgreens are absolutely packed with nutrients and are very healthy for you. A study of 25 different microgreens conducted in 2012 by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry concluded that microgreens have four to six times more nutrients than their mature counterparts. They have enormous flavor and are great in a salad or on your favorite sandwich. If you would like to give them a try, head over to the farmer’s market and get some.

If you garden and have an over-abundance of vegetables, you can bring them to the market and sell them. We are always looking for people to bring fresh produce for the community.

If you have any questions about it, you can call David Ash at 520-400-1900 or Kendal Pliner at 515-570-0058.

The market is held at 11 N. 25th St., northeast of Kemna and will run from June 10 through Oct. 14. Come join us on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Starting at $4.62/week.
