Pool season is swimmers’ ear season

Otitis externa, or “swimmer’s ears,” is the inflammation of the outer ear. With summer here, providers and parents alike can expect to see a rise in this condition. Swimmers’ ears can be caused by moisture or bacterial/fungal overgrowth in the ear.

Swimming, sweating and even being in high humidity environments can contribute to moisture and be a factor in developing swimmers’ ears. Swimming in lakes or other open bodies of water which may be contaminated can also be a contributing factor.

Otitis externa also includes general trauma to the ear which can be caused by using Q-tips or other foreign objects to scratch or remove earwax from the ear.

Children may make complaints such as ‘my ear itches” or “my ear feels full” when dealing with this condition, and they may also have trouble hearing or have ear discharge throughout the day or on their pillowcase after a night’s rest. If these symptoms or complaints arise, it is best to get the ears checked out or speak to someone who may have an answer.

The best way to prevent swimmers’ ears is to keep the ears dry. If your child loves to swim, consider some affordable silicone ear plugs. If your child is involved in lots of activities which may lead them to work up a sweat, pack a small towel in their bag to wipe off their face and ears during such activities.

Avoiding lakes and other unsanitary bodies of water is also helpful.

Additionally, there are some over the counter ear drops that help clear or dry out the ears. These can be used after pool time or even after a shower. Also, reminding your child to keep foreign objects out of their ears will help decrease the chance of developing other forms of otitis externa.

The summer is meant to be full of fun. However, the ears are not meant to be full of water. Making small efforts to keep the ears healthy and dry can help keep the summer enjoyable for all.
