PA County officials: Be wary of scams

EMMETSBURG – The Palo Alto County sheriff’s office is alerting residents of a phone scam after being contacted by a potential victim.

On March 28, a woman near Graettinger contacted deputies after receiving a call from someone who lived in a “high crime area and therefore qualified for a free alarm system,” according to a press release from the Palo Alto County sheriff’s office.

The woman was then told to press 1 if she wanted a free alarm system or 2 to have her name removed from the list.

The press release said any one who receives one of these calls shouldn’t press any of the buttons, since nobody knows what may actually happen. They advised those who receive a suspicous call should hang up and call their local law enforcement agency.
