Iowa council replaces demoted police chief

NASHUA (AP) – A city council in northern Iowa has promoted an officer to take over for the demoted police chief.

On Monday night the Nashua City Council gave the job to Paul Becthold, who’s been with the force for more than a dozen years. He’d been named interim chief after Ernie Willsher was demoted back to being an officer. The four-member department watches over a town of nearly 1,700 residents.

Mayor Deanne Lantow said in the demotion notice to Willsher on June 20 that his attitude was to blame, but she did not go into specifics. Willsher’s lawyer said Willsher was demoted after taking medical leave.
