The cause of a fire that heavily damaged a building on the former Corpus Christi Church campus Sunday morning remains under investigation.
No one was injured.
The fire was in a structure with a smokestack between the church building and the former rectory in the 400 block of North Eighth Street, just north of downtown.
The blaze was reported at 7:43 a.m. Heavy smoke was pouring from the building when firefighters arrived.
The fire was in the west end of the building and throughout its attic, according to Fire Department reports. The fire also damaged nearby electrical lines, and a tree caught fire.
Multiple hoselines were used to extinguish the blaze.
Seven off-duty firefighters were called in to help at the scene and to be available to respond to any other emergency calls.
Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours.
Fort Dodge police and crews from MidAmerican Energy also responded.
The property is owned by Holy Trinity Parish.
A central heating plant was built on the church grounds sometime between 1909 and 1932, according to the Holy Trinity Parish web site. The fire-damaged building with its large but crumbling smoke stack may have been that heating plant.
