Fort Dodge hosts district golf meet
The Fort Dodge boys golf squad concluded its season by hosting a Class 4A district meet at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Monday.
The Dodgers carded a 340.
“I can’t say we had a bad day,” FDSH head coach Nick Vinson said. “We have to remind ourselves that two years ago, we hosted a district meet here with four of these same kids and had a 376. We are making progress. A 340 would’ve been a really solid goal for us if we’d been having this conversation in 2023 and were looking ahead.
“We just couldn’t stay out of our own way, which was a consistent theme to this season. No matter how solid we were in stretches, we couldn’t avoid the bigger numbers that are hard to overcome.”
Junior Mason Frevert carded an 81 to pace the Dodgers. Junior Davis Underberg (85), senior Jaxson Dencklau (86), senior Gavin Davis (88), junior Trace Rial (88) and senior Karter Hemrick (92) followed.
“I think the consistent theme heading into the offseason is if we want to be better competitive stroke-play performers, we have to focus on what it takes specifically to attain those goals,” Vinson said. “The months ahead are so important to improve your game, both physically and mentally. But it’s not just about being on the course or at (a practice facility). It’s creating and maintaining the right habits and training routines.
“There are times where making a bogey is OK, rather than taking risks and trying for something better but ending up with a triple because of it. There are times where it makes sense to take a chance on a shot versus going the conservative route. We have to be better about our mentality and those decision-making skills moving forward as a program. But I am proud of our guys and the steps forward we continue to (collectively) take.”
Johnston (283) edged Waukee Northwest (284) by a single stroke for team championship honors. Dragon senior Andrew Johannsen fired a two-under par 69 to clinch medalist recognition, with freshman teammate Rowan Riddle (70) and junior Henry Baker (70) next in line.
Junior Grant Sorrel (70) and senior Blake Cronin (70) paced the Wolves, followed by seniors Landry Vogelaar (72) and Zach Petsche (72).
Johnston, Northwest and Dallas Center-Grimes advanced to next week’s state tournament at Hyperion Field Club in Johnston, along with individuals Dylan Vanner (Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln) and McCoy Miller (Ankeny Centennial).
