ROCKWELL CITY — Wendy Larson, of Odeboldt, won the Republican nomination Tuesday evening for the District 7 seat in the Iowa House of Representatives.

She will face Democrat Rachel Burns, also of Odeboldt, in the Dec. 9 special election prompted by the resignation of former state Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City.

Larson won the nomination on the first ballot, besting Dan DeWall, of Manson, by a margin of 71 percent to 43 percent.

“Thank you for trusting me,” Larson said to the Republican delegates gathered in the courtroom of the Calhoun County Courthouse.

She described herself as a “lifetime constitutional conservative.”

“I believe I’m called to serve,” she added.

House District 7 includes Calhoun, Pocahontas and Sac counties plus the western part of Webster County.

Sexton had represented the district since 2015. He resigned Sept. 19 to become the director of the United States Department of Agriculture’s rural development programs in Iowa.

Delegates from throughout House District 7 who were picked during previous party caucuses came together Tuesday to pick the nominee. There were 34 of 37 delegates present.

DeWall and Larson both made brief speeches. Then a vote was conducted by paper ballot. A simple majority was needed to win the nomination.

Larson had challenged Sexton in the Republican primary last year.

She has said she is opposed to the use of eminent domain to acquire land for carbon dioxide pipelines. She said she is also opposed to “foreign land ownership endangering security and indoctrination of children in schools.”

Larson and her husband, Chad, have three children who were home-schooled. She is a deaconess at Kiron Baptist Church and a volunteer at the Mobile Food Pantry.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. She is a small business owner.
