Man in hospital after hotel standoff

Police: Individual was armed, suicidal

A man described by police as armed and suicidal was hospitalized after a nearly four hour long standoff in a Fort Dodge hotel Tuesday night.

The man was not identified by police and no information on his condition was released Wednesday.

Webster County 911 dispatchers received a call at 8:56 p.m. Tuesday reporting that a man was threatening to harm himself in his room at the Baymont Inn & Suites, 2938 Fifth Ave. S.

According to police reports, as officers arrived at the hotel, dispatchers informed them that the man had called them stating he had a gun and was going to kill everyone. Officers secured the area and ensured that all other guests at the hotel were safe. Then they called the man to talk to him.

The Special Emergency Response Team, a group of Fort Dodge police officers and Webster County sheriff’s deputies trained and equipped to handle high risk situations, was called.

During the next four hours, officers tried to talk the man into surrendering peacefully. Several times, the man came out of his hotel room with a handgun and asked the officers and deputies to shoot him, according to the Police Department.

Officers believe that during the standoff, the man ingested an unknown amount of medicine. He became unresponsive. After the man stopped communicating with them, officers and deputies went into his room and began lifesaving measures on him. He was transported by ambulance to UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center.

No hotel guests, staff members or law enforcement officers were injured.

The Fort Dodge police and fire departments, Webster County Sheriff’s Office, and Webster County Attorney’s Office responded to the incident.
