WEBSTER CITY — Two kayakers were rescued from the Boone River south of Webster City on Sunday after their kayaks got hung up on a log in the rising water.
The Webster City Fire Department’s water rescue team answered the call that came in at 2:21 p.m., according to Fire Chief Chuck Stansfield.
“The Boone River at that time had raised overnight by about 6 inches and was moving very rapidly,” Stansfield said in a media release. “Rescue Boat 1 responded along with Rescue 35 for search and rescue. The two people were reported last seen around the Albright landing.”
The Boone River was flowing in excess of 2,000 cubic feet per second at the time, according to USGS statistics.
Stansfield said Rescue Boat 1 put in at Albright landing 16 minutes later and began its search for the kayakers.
About the same time, Stratford Fire staged at the Tunnel Mill landing, he said.
Boat 1 located the female kayaker who was hanging onto a kayak in the river floating down toward the Beaver entrance.
Both kayakers were rescued by Capt. Andy Sowle, Lt. Todd Madsen, and Firefighter Hunter Hayes, who together were able to get the pair into their rescue boat and get them safely to shore, Stansfield said.
“Once on the ground, Van Diest Medical gave them patient care and was able to release them with no injuries,” he said.
In addition to Webster City Fire, Stratford Fire and Van Diest Medical, Hamilton County Sheriff and Conservation also responded to the area for assistance and were stationed at the Albright landing, according to the fire chief.
“This was a great example of Hamilton County’s emergency services working together for the good of our community,” he said. “Special thanks to all who responded to this rescue and for the positive outcome of this rescue.”
Boone River walking trail temporarily closed
Due to rising river levels, the City of Webster City is temporarily closing the walking trail along the Boone River as a precaution.
This closure will remain in effect until further notice to ensure the safety of community members.
Current River Level: 8.1 feet
Expected Crest: 10.2 feet on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
The City urges everyone to respect the barricades that are now in place and choose safety.
