Former FDCF inmates charged in attacks on officers

Two former Fort Dodge Correctional Facility inmates are facing felony charges for separate attacks on corrections officers.

Both inmates were transferred to the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison after the attacks. Both made their initial appearances in Webster County Magistrate Court Tuesday morning via a remote link from the penitentiary.

Markel K. Sanders, 25, is charged with assault on persons in certain occupations — bodily injury. According to the criminal complaint filed against him, Sanders repeatedly punched a corrections officer on Sept. 19, 2023

A preliminary hearing for Sanders was scheduled for April 5.

Jerome M. Okha, 26, is charged with willful injury causing serious injury. On Jan. 12, he grabbed a corrections officer and slammed her against a concrete floor, according to the criminal complaint filed against him.

A preliminary hearing for him was also set for April 5.
