State Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink, R-Fort Dodge, announced Wednesday that he is running for reelection.
And if voters think that Kraayenbrink was just reelected, they would be correct. Due to a quirk resulting from legislative redistricting after the 2020 census, he is running again even though he was reelected in 2022.
The redistricting moved Kraayenbrink from an odd numbered Senate district to an even numbered one. Even-numbered seats are always on the ballot during presidential election years.
Kraayenbrink was first elected in 2014. He was reelected in 2018 and 2022. He has served two full four-year terms and is now completing the unusual two-year term prompted by the redistricting.
He represents Senate District 4, which includes Calhoun, Pocahontas, Sac and Webster counties.
In launching his re-election bid, Kraayenbrink touted the accomplishments of Republicans in the legislature.
“The last several years have included major accomplishments for northwest Iowa,” he said. “This includes historic income tax relief, historic property tax relief, all while responsibly managing the budget and investing in our priorities.
“We’ve put more money into public schools than ever, we’ve given parents more choice and control over their child’s education and put Iowa in a strong economic position,” he added. “I know we aren’t finished yet, and there is more we can do to improve our state and move it in the right direction. That is why I’m proud to announce I am running for another term in the Iowa Senate.”
Kraayenbrink is the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which has a leading role in determining how the state government spends money.
The senator owns Kraayenbrink Financial Services. He has a bachelor’s degree from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
He and his wife, Sally, have three children and six grandchildren.
He is the only candidate in the race in Senate District 4 so far.
