One shooting suspect arrested, second remains at large

One of the men wanted for attempted murder in connection with a July 30 shooting in Fort Dodge has been apprehended.

According to court documents, Austin Scott Ferguson, 29, of Fort Dodge, was arrested sometime in the afternoon or evening on Wednesday, shortly after a warrant for his arrest was issued. Ferguson had his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Thursday morning.

According to the criminal complaint, on July 30, at about 8 p.m., Ferguson was the front passenger of a Honda Ridgeline pickup truck that was following a vehicle driven by Timothy James Ellis, of Fort Dodge, for at least five city blocks. When Ellis stopped to talk to an individual sitting in another vehicle in the 1400 block of First Avenue North, the Honda passed by Ellis while Ferguson shot at him with a handgun from the passenger window.

Ferguson allegedly fired 11 shots at Ellis and 10 shell casings were recovered. According to the complaint, Ellis’ vehicle was hit six times, with one bullet lodged about a foot from where Ellis had been sitting in the vehicle.

On Wednesday afternoon, arrest warrants were issued for Ferguson and his alleged accomplice, his father Jason H. Ferguson. Jason Ferguson is wanted for aiding and abetting attempted murder. As of press time on Thursday he remains at large.
