Another road trip for Tritons
IOWA FALLS — The 14th-ranked Iowa Central football team concludes an extended road swing here Saturday vs. ICCAC rival Ellsworth.
Kickoff is set for noon from Cadet Field.
With a win, the Tritons (4-3 overall, 0-1 in ICCAC) will clinch the runner-up position in the conference and a likely postseason game in Cedar Falls later this year.
After earning dominating wins over Dodge City and College of DuPage away from home to start the month, Iowa Central dropped a 34-21 decision to No. 10 Coffeyville last Saturday.
Turnovers caused problems for the Tritons vs. Coffeyville, as they had three fumbles and an interception. Damarcus Creecy, Ty Purdy and Trevon Taylor combined to throw for 340 yards, as Ethan Johnson led a balanced rushing attack with 44.
Creecy and Purdy both have over 600 yards in the air this year and a combined 14 touchdown passes. Johnson ranks among the top rushers in the nation with 522 yards, as Creecy has six rushing touchdowns to lead the Tritons.
“We moved the ball and dominated every stat, but we fumbled three times and didn’t recover any of them and (Coffeyville) fumbled three times and found a way to get on top of them,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “The kids battled back after getting down in a 17-0 hole and we had a chance at 24-21, but they made a play and that was kind of the difference in the game.”
Taylor Schaefer anchors the defense with 63 tackles, averaging nine per game, as Mason Chandler has 43 and Ahmad Grayer 34.
All three of Iowa Central’s loss have come to ranked teams, as they have also fallen to top-rated Hutchinson and No. 2 Iowa Western. The Tritons close out the year with games against sixth-ranked Garden City and No. 13 Butler after hosting Independence.
Ellsworth (3-4, 0-0) has earned wins over Central Lakes-Brainerd, Highland and Dodge City this year. In a 21-13 victory vs. Dodge City last week, Deandre Rutherford ran for 121 yards and a TD while Armoud Seals had 106 yards passing and a touchdown.
“They are much better on both sides of the ball,” Montalto said. “They have a couple solid cornerbacks, a tough defensive line and some good skill kids. They are a solid football team.”
