Taking center stage with Abby Meyer

Meyer loves being part of a production and playing music

Abby Meyer has been on and behind the stage and loves every minute of being part of the stage no matter where it is.

Meyer, a senior at Fort Dodge Senior High School, has been a part of numerous productions as a Dodger and enjoys being part of the musical scene.

The Dodger senior is involved in marching band, concert band, jazz band and choir and plays the alto and tenor saxophones.

Behind the stage, she has been stage manager for the plays “While the Lights Were Out” and “Radium Girls” and the musicals.

“Being able to be stage manager for two years was such an awesome experience,” Meyer said. “Having mutual respect for the cast and crew working with me was so awesome.

“It was also fun working with Mrs. Krug and being one of Mrs. Merrill’s “chicken nuggets.”

She also takes part in speech, and is part of her youth group at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Meyer also recently played in the Fort Dodge Symphony.

“Being a part of the Fort Dodge Symphony was so fantastic,” Meyer said. “People of all ages that love music came together to play for the community.”

Meyer’s most memorable experience is just sharing a kind word.

“The most memorable thing that has happened is seeing how much of an impact a kind word or action can have (my mom Lynn Meyer taught me that),” Meyer said.

Ever since she was little, Meyer has enjoyed being able to share her passion.

“I started performing way before I can remember,” Meyer said. “The first time I started to improv (which was really the first step outside my comfort zone) was because of my director and my instructor at the time and as always my family.”

For Meyer, pushing herself to be the best she can be and try new things keeps her focused.

“There is this quote from the book ‘You Don’t Need a Title to Be a Leader’ by Mark Sanborn,” Meyer said. “If you’re big enough for your dream, your dream isn’t big enough for you.

“If you stay in your comfort zone, you’ll never be able to grow and how can you reach your dreams if you don’t grow?”

While on stage, it gives Meyer a chance to show her work.

“Performing gives you a chance to show your hard work on different pieces and plays,” Meyer said. “It is also really cool to see how much music can make an impact on both your life and other people.”

While being at Fort Dodge Senior High, Meyer has had some big influences in her life.

“My biggest influences have been my brother Ben,” Meyer said. “As well as my old saxophone instructor Les Fonza, Mr. (Al) Paulson and speech director Mrs. (Lindey) Krug.”

After high school, Meyer plans on attending either Iowa State or the University of Missouri.
