Steck investigation began on Oct. 19

No details being released

When allegations of criminal activity or misconduct by a Webster County Sheriff’s Office detective were made by the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Webster County Attorney’s Office asked the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to continue the investigation as a neutral party.

According to Webster County Attorney Darren Driscoll, his office was notified by the Police Department about certain allegations against Sheriff’s Detective Tom Steck on Oct. 19. The same day, Driscoll’s office contacted the DCI to start an investigation.

No indication of what comprised the allegations against Steck were released.

A mandatory Brady/Giglio Disclosure was filed on 14 pending cases in Webster County, involving nine defendants. Brady/Giglio requires prosecutors to disclose to defense counsel and defendants when an officer involved in the case has alleged incidents of misconduct that put their credibility into question.

Steck joined the Sheriff’s Office in May 2021. Prior to that, he had worked for the Fort Dodge Police Department for 12 years.

The DCI investigation into Steck is ongoing.
