Webster County Auditor Abrams resigns

Republican cites workload; Supervisors weigh how to fill seat in election year

Webster County Auditor Shaunna Abrams resigned Tuesday, notifying the Board of Supervisors she will leave office July 16 — less than two years into the four-year term she won in 2024.

Abrams, a Republican who took office Jan. 2, 2025, submitted her formal resignation to the board at 4:37 p.m. Tuesday.

She cited the demands of the job, writing that “increasing demands and workload” had made it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance and that stepping down was the best decision for her at this time.

In her resignation notice, she did not indicate what her future plans are.

She succeeded retiring Auditor Doreen Pliner after winning nearly 65 percent of the vote over Democrat Krystal Lloyd.

As auditor, Abrams also serves as Webster County’s commissioner of elections, overseeing voting in addition to keeping the county’s financial records and acting as clerk to the board. Her departure lands in the middle of an election year, a wrinkle county officials said sets this vacancy apart from past ones.

The Board of Supervisors is consulting Webster County Attorney Darren Driscoll and reviewing state law to determine how the seat will be filled for the remainder of Abrams’ term, which runs through 2028. Because the vacancy falls in an election year, board members said, the process will differ from previous county office vacancies.

“While I am saddened to see Auditor Abrams go, I respect her decision and wish her well,” said board Chair Austin Hayek, who pledged to lead the board through a smooth transition “in accordance with Iowa law.”

“In addition, our focus will be on filling this important role with a committed appointee, supporting the incredible team in the Auditor’s Office, and protecting the integrity of county operations, especially as we work to serve voters during an already complex election year,” said Supervisor Niki Conrad.

Starting at $4.62/week.
