Private plane makes emergency landing in Humboldt County soybean field
THOR — A private Cessna aircraft piloted by a Colorado man had to make an emergency landing in a soybean field north of Thor in Humboldt County Tuesday morning.
According to a release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, James Kelley, of Fort Collins, Colorado, was flying from Wisconsin back to Colorado when the Cessna he was piloting ran low on fuel, causing the engine to sputter and forcing Kelley to make an emergency landing in the field around 8:30 a.m. The aircraft landed just northwest of 2095 Utah Ave.
Neither Kelley nor the passenger in the plane, Janine Kelley, sustained injuries in the landing. There was damage to a nearby fence and the soybean field. The plane also did not sustain damage.
According to the release, a “good Samaritan” provided fuel to the plane and the aircraft was able to take off from the nearby gravel road of Texas Avenue.
Kelley will be responsible for compensating the owners of the fence and crops for damages.
The HCSO was assisted on the scene by the Humboldt County Engineer and Humboldt County Secondary Roads.
