FD man injured in single-vehicle crash
SUV overturned and landed near railroad tracks
A Fort Dodge man was found injured Monday night after the SUV he was driving went off the roadway near a bridge on the city’s south side. The vehicle then overturned and landed near a set of railroad tracks below.
Bradley Banks, 32, was driving an SUV northbound along South 22nd Street, south of 15th Avenue South near National Gypsum, according to Fort Dodge Police Department reports.
At some point, while driving around a curve, Banks lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle ran off the road to the right and down the hill before hitting rocks on the south side of the Canadian National Railway tracks. The SUV then overturned before landing on its top on the north side of the tracks.
A precise time of the crash is unknown, according to Capt. Ryan Gruenberg, of the Fort Dodge Police Department.
“It’s believed the crash occurred well before it was discovered by a passerby,” Gruenberg said. “So it’s unclear just how long the accident had gone undiscovered.”
The location of the vehicle and the dark conditions made it difficult to see from the roadway.
A passerby reported the crash at about 9: 22 p.m.
First responders arrived on scene a short time later. A train had to be stopped while Fort Dodge Fire Rescue worked for several minutes to extract Banks from the vehicle.
According to police, Banks was able to communicate with officers on scene, but because of his injuries he was not able to recall what exactly happened or when.
Banks was transported by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center for further treatment. His current condition was unknown on Tuesday.
The SUV was totaled.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
