Williams pleads guilty to lesser charges

Donathan Williams

A Fort Dodge man accused of stabbing another man at a downtown apartment in July 2020 has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Donathan L. Williams, 42, was arrested on July 2, 2020, after the victim, 39-year-old Lavaris Bosworth, walked into the Community Health Center of Fort Dodge, 126 N. 10th St., with wounds on his neck and back. Bosworth was transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center for serious injuries.

The criminal complaint for the incident said that Bosworth was stabbed after Williams followed him up to his fifth-floor apartment in the Biltwell Apartment building, 106 N. 10th St.

Video surveillance showed Williams, walking with a knife, involved in an apparent altercation in the apartment before leaving, then returning and chasing the victim down the hallway toward the building’s fire escape. In addition to video surveillance, a very apparent trail of blood led officers to the scene of the crime.

Williams was identified, arrested and charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony; willful injury causing serious injury, a Class C felony; and going armed with intent, a Class D felony.

Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges in late July and was scheduled to go to trial in Webster County District Court on April 20.

On Friday, Williams entered a plea deal with the prosecution and pleaded guilty to willful injury causing serious injury, a Class C forcible felony, while the state dismissed the charges of attempted murder and going armed with intent.

The state will recommend a 10-year prison sentence and a $1,000 fine. The “forcible” classification means the prison sentence cannot be suspended.

Williams’ sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

*An earlier version of this story incorrectly defined the “forcible” classification of the crime. A “forcible” classification requires a sentence of incarceration, but does not require a minimum amount of time served.
