Webster County Public Health immunization nurse Katie Loeske holds one of the meningitis vaccines the clinic administers during its child immunization clinics. WCPH will be holding three child immunization clinics throughout July, the first starting today at 9 a.m. through 4 p.m.

Webster County families whose children are in need of their scheduled immunizations will have the opportunity to catch up on those during three child immunization clinics the Webster County Public Health Department is holding in July.

The first clinic begins today.

“These clinics are usually scheduled at the schools and we try to get these done so it’s a little bit more convenient for the parents, but we had it scheduled for right after the COVID-19 stuff started so then we had to cancel them all,” explained WCPH immunization nurse Katie Loeske. “We’re trying to offer a few more just so we can get these kids in before school starts.”

The clinics will have nearly all vaccines available, including TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), meningitis and human papilloma virus.

Iowa students entering seventh grade and 12th grade must receive the meningitis vaccine.

Immunizations to infectious diseases like meningitis, polio, HPV, measles and more are important, Loeske said.

“They’re recommended throughout our lives to protect against serious diseases,” she said. “We just want to make sure everybody can stay safe and healthy.”

Most insurers cover the cost of the vaccines, Loeske said. But for those who are underinsured or uninsured, the state has the Vaccines for Children Program that helps with the cost. One vaccine is $14, and the total for two or more is $25. The department will work with anyone facing a financial hardship.

Families will need to call ahead at 515-573-4107 or text 515-206-5082 to make an appointment so that WCPH can ensure social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 are maintained.

“We’re trying to make sure that nobody is waiting in our waiting room or passing in the halls,” she said.

WCPH staff will wear masks during the appointments, Loeske said. Patients are welcome and encouraged to wear masks, but are not required to do so.

“We’re making sure we’re doing the best we can to protect our patients,” she said.

The Iowa Department of Public Health requires immunizations for diphtheria, measles, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, rubeola, rubella, varicella, meningococcal and hepatitis type B. The state of Iowa allows only medical and religious exemptions to the vaccine mandate.

According to the IDPH, students who do not provide a certificate of immunization, provisional certificate of immunization or certificate of immunization exemption prior to the first day of school will not be allowed to attend.

The child immunization clinic will be open today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On July 13 and July 31, the clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All clinics will be at the Webster County Public Health office, 723 First Ave. S., Suite 220.
