Humboldt woman charged with theft of $56,000

DAKOTA CITY — A Humboldt woman faces multiple charges after police say her former employer discovered $56,303 stolen through the company’s checkbook.

Krystle Graaf, 32, was arrested and charged with ongoing criminal conduct, first-degree theft, and four counts of forgery on Sept. 23, according to court records. She was released on her own recognizance on Sept. 25 after her attorney argued for a bail reduction, and awaits trial.

Criminal complaints say that Graaf wrote 39 checks to herself from the company check book at Jergen’s Body and Alignment, 1207 11th St. N. in Humboldt, over nearly two years between September 2017 and May 2019.

The complaints allege that she forged the signature of her boss on most of the checks that she wrote to herself, but did steal one made out to the company by forging an endorsement to herself and depositing it into her account.

Police say four of the checks were made out fraudulently in 2017, 29 in 2018 and six this year. The bulk of the checks, in 2018, came to a total of $40,751.

She has waived her preliminary hearing, which was scheduled for this week.
