FD police continue investigation into weekend shootings

Gruenberg:?There are several potential suspects

The search continues as Fort Dodge police look for answers to two separate shootings on Saturday and Sunday, one of which wounded a 16-year-old boy.

Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said investigators are working to explore every possibility and compile leads to understand what led to each of the shootings. Given that very few weekends in Fort Dodge see two shootings in two consecutive days, he said they are also exploring the possibility that the shootings are related.

“There’s a multitude of things, we’re just trying to figure it out,” he said. “We’re filtering through the information to find what’s accurate.”

Gruenberg said police have several people in mind to explore as potential suspects. At this point, they believe the 16-year-old injured on Saturday was involved to some degree with the shooter and was more than a bystander caught in the crosshairs.

“We feel they knew one another,” Gruenberg said, acknowledging that their understanding of the motives and social connections was still in development.

The 16-year-old boy who suffered gunshot wounds to his leg in the Saturday afternoon shooting has since been treated and released from the hospital, according to officials. The boy was injured when shots were fired that day at about 1:30 p.m. in the 1800 and 1900 blocks of Fourth Avenue South. The boy, whom police are not identifying due to his age, was taken to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle.

Responding police officers and Webster County sheriff’s deputies learned that a vehicle may have been involved and fled the area. Police don’t believe the shooting was a random act.

In another case, police were called to the intersection of Sixth Avenue South and South 14th Street around 8 p.m. Sunday, where they found a red Ford pickup truck that was struck with at least three bullets, including one that cracked the windshield and another that popped a tire.

No one was hit by the bullets, but one male was treated on scene for cuts from shattered glass. No one was transported to the hospital.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fort Dodge Police Department at 573-1424. They can also anonymously report information to Webster County Crime Stoppers by calling 573-1444, visiting www.wccrimestoppers.com or texting “LEC” and the tip to 274637.
