FD man gets federal prison for meth, gun charges

Groat must serve 15 years for meth, firearms charges

A Fort Dodge man who pleaded guilty to methamphetamine and firearms charges has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, according to prosecutors.

Cody Groat, 25, was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City, the U.S, Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa reported.

He had pleaded guilty on Nov. 16, 2018, to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possession of firearms by a domestic abuser, the attorney’s office reported.

Prosecutors said Groat had been caught with three-quarters of a pound of meth and four guns, two of which were stolen.

Between 2017 and July 2018, Groat was part of a conspiracy that distributed more than four pounds of meth in the Fort Dodge area, prosecutors reported.

Law enforcement officers searched his home on Dec. 27, 2017, and found meth, three handguns, a shotgun and 9 mm ammunition.

Strand sentenced Groat to 180 months in prison plus five years of supervised release after his prison term.

The case was investigated by Fort Dodge police; Webster County Sheriff’s Department; the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation; and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
