Teen convicted of shooting uncle in Fort Dodge

November incident resulted in lockdown of Butler Elementary

A Fort Dodge teenager has been found guilty of shooting his uncle during a November incident that forced a nearby elementary school to be locked down, according to Webster County Attorney Jennifer Benson.

Isiah C. Mosley, 14, was adjudicated delinquent of attempted murder following a juvenile court trial, Benson said in a written statement. District Associate Court Judge Angela L. Doyle announced the ruling Thursday.

Mosley, who remains in a juvenile detention center, was charged with shooting Robert Rivers Jr., 25, on Nov. 28, 2016, at 1816 Seventh Ave. S.

Police and emergency personnel were sent to that address at 2:43 p.m. that day.

Firefighters and paramedics treated Rivers at the scene for gunshot wounds. He was then taken to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

Butler Elementary School, 945 S. 18th St., was locked down for about 30 minutes after the shooting. No one could enter or leave the school during the lockdown.

Benson said witnesses told police that Mosley, Rivers and other family members had been arguing at the home. She said that about 45 minutes after the argument, three gunshots were fired from the sidewalk into the enclosed front porch of the home. Rivers, who was on the porch, was hit in the chest by one bullet. Another bullet grazed his left ear.

An investigation into another case yielded a key piece of evidence related to the shooting.

On Dec. 1, 2016, police searched a home at 1435 Fourth Ave. S. as part of a narcotics investigation. Officers found a Rossi/Interarms .38 Special revolver there. The weapon contained two unfired bullets and three spent cartridges.

According to Benson, a resident of the Fourth Avenue South home told investigators that Mosley came to the house and gave him the gun. Benson said the resident recalled that Mosley was out of breath as if he had been running when he showed up with the gun.

The gun and the two bullets recovered at 1816 Seventh Ave. S. were sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation lab in Ankeny. A ballistics expert there positively identified the two bullets found at Seventh Avenue South as having been fired from the gun found at Fourth Avenue South, according to Benson.

The case was investigated by the Fort Dodge Police Department.

“Their excellent work and thorough investigation, along with the cooperation of multiple eyewitnesses from our community, played a key role in the successful prosecution of this case,” Benson said.

Benson and Assistant Webster County Attorney Hans Becker prosecuted the case.
