Woman ejected from SUV in crash

Driver facing drunk driving charge

Nolan Randall

A woman who was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle Friday morning was ejected after the vehicle rolled over on the east side of Fort Dodge.

The driver of that vehicle, Nolan Randall, 20, of Livermore, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.

Police have not identified the woman, who suffered “major injuries,” according to a criminal complaint, filed with the Webster County attorney’s office.

According to Police Chief Kevin Doty, emergency personnel were dispatched to the 3400 block of 10th Avenue North at 4:45 a.m. Friday after receiving a report of a single-vehicle accident.

Officers found Randall, who was not injured.

The woman was found about 40 feet away from the SUV, Doty said.

The 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe hit a patch of ice, causing it to go into the north ditch and roll, according to Doty.

Fort Dodge firefighters responded to the scene to help care for the woman, Fire Chief Kent Hulett said.

“They started to stabilize the patient before the arrival of an ambulance,” Hulett said. “And they assisted the ambulance with any medical treatment.”

She was initially taken to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Hulett said hours later the Fire Department was contacted again to transport the woman to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Hulett said the woman’s injuries needed more advanced care than she’d be able to receive at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

When a rollover happens, Hulett said the Fire Department has many responsibilities.

“Obviously, with a rollover, we try to make sure there’s no hazards, such as leaking gasoline, and the vehicle’s secured,” he said. “Obviously if there’s somebody trapped in the vehicle, we have specialized rescue equipment to extricate any patients trapped in or underneath the vehicle.”

The woman’s condition is not known by officials.

Randall, according to the complaint, had a blood-alcohol content of .150 percent.

He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, a Class D felony, as well as failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor.

Magistrate William Thatcher set Randall’s bond at $5,000. He also told Randall that, if he posted bond, he must report to the Department of Correctional Services and sign up for pre-trial supervision.

A Webster County jailer said that Randall bonded out Friday afternoon.

Randall’s preliminary hearing is Jan. 20.
