King Band features something for everyone Sunday
On Sunday evening, the weekly concert by the Karl L. King Municipal Band will feature something for everyone’s musical taste. Conductor Dan Cassady will lead the band in an hourlong sampling from a wide variety of music. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park.
These summer concerts are provided, free of charge, by the city of Fort Dodge for everyone’s listening pleasure. Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs, since no public seating is provided.
March music is always on the program, and this week will include “The New Corn Palace,” “King Henry,” “Pride of the Illini,” and “Sarasota,” all composed by the band’s namesake, Karl L. King, along with Russell Alexander’s exciting circus march, “Colossus of Columbia.”
The evening’s classical offerings will include the contemporary selection, “American Overture for Band” by Joseph Willcox Jenkins. Jenkins spent several years as an arranger for the U.S. Army Field Band and the Armed Forces Radio Network. He wrote this overture in 1953, and it has become his most famous work among more than 200 of his compositions. Also on the program is the thrilling “March and Procession of Bacchus” by French composer Leo Delibes from his 1876 ballet, “Sylvia,” which originally debuted at the Opera House in Paris, France.
Featured soloists for this concert will be two regular members of the band performing together on a novelty duet, “The Elephant and the Fly,” by Henri Kling. Featured on piccolo will be Megan Benz, instrumental music instructor at the Alta-Aurelia Community School, and on tuba will be Paul Bloomquist, instrumental music instructor at Iowa Central Community College.
On the lighter side will be a medley titled “Big Band Signatures,” including well-known theme songs from the Big Band era for the bands of Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller. Topping off this fun evening of band music will be the well-known ballad, “I Left by Heart in San Francisco” and a delightful Latin selection, “Beguine for Band.”
In case of inclement weather at the starting time, the concert may be delayed or cancelled. Any announcement will be made on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/. Plan now to be in attendance each Sunday evening through July 27 to hear the finest in band music played by your own local municipal band.
The Southeast Valley Music Boosters will serve ice cream and treats before and during this concert for a freewill offering,
