Bands will rock Sheldon Park this weekend

15th annual Rock-N-Picnic offers two days of fun

HUMBOLDT – A full schedule of free, family friendly activities and musical entertainment will take place this weekend at Lower Sheldon Park west of Humboldt.

The 15th annual Rock-N-Picnic will kick-off this evening featuring the band Barefoot & Sunshine at 5:30 p.m. and the Craig Gerdes Band will take the stage at 8 p.m.

Today will also feature a freewill donation Cajun shrimp boil meal.

Sunday’s events will start with a bags tournament at 1 p.m. Registration for the tournament will begin at noon. Music will begin at 2:30 p.m. when Lovebomb takes the stage, followed by Riddled With Class at 4 p.m., Recoil at 6 p.m. and finally the Jeremy DeWall Band. Acoustic acts will be featured between bands.

“We like to keep the music going and feature some local acts in between,” said Scott Dahl, one of the event organizers.

Sunday will also offer a freewill donation barbecue meal and 50/50 drawing plus a live auction before the final band of the evening.

Dahl said that while there are no set admission fees to the concerts, the entire event is funded each year entirely by donations.

“Everything we do is funded by donations,” said Dahl. “We were able to become a 501c3 non-profit about a year ago and all that we do take in goes right back toward putting on next year’s events.”

The Rock-N-Picnic is held annually the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. It was founded in 2009. Dahl was in the audience for the first few picnics and got involved a few years after it began.

“It got started with a few guys who wanted to have an event the Sunday before Labor Day,” said Dahl. “I attended the first couple of years as a spectator then asked how I could help. They asked me what I knew about running a stage, and I’ve been booking bands and running the stage ever since.”

Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and their own coolers with food and beverages from home. Limited space will also be available on a first come first served basis for canopy set up. Tent camping will also be available near the event with regular park rates applying.

The entire event is free, with freewill donations accepted throughout the day.

“We love promoting and bringing a clean, family friendly show to Humboldt,” said Dahl. “It is hard to believe we are in our 15th year and we are humbled that we are able to do this and bring a good family event to the community for the Labor Day weekend.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
