City Council members are sworn in
Fort Dodge faces challenges and opportunities in the days ahead
On Tuesday, Mayor Matt Bemrich and the other members of the Fort Dodge City Council elected in November were sworn in. The Honorable Mark Cady, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court who is a Fort Dodge resident, administered the oath of office. The only newcomer to the council is Lydia Schuur who won one of two at-large slots. David Flattery had been an at-large council member but was elected in November to represent Ward 3. Councilmen Jeff Halter (at-large), Terry Moehnke (Ward 1), Dean Hill (Ward 2) and Kim Alstott (Ward 4) were re-elected.
Fort Dodge has powerful assets including an emerging biofuels industry, a top-notch medical center and the remarkable educational resources of Iowa Central Community College and Buena Vista University. Like all towns and cities it has problem areas that must be addressed. Deploying the community’s strengths with creativity is the key to a splendid future. The members of the City Council play an important role in making sure that happens.
Those individuals who serve on City Council — working in harmony with Mayor Matt Bemrich — can help Fort Dodge face the 21st century with determination and wisdom.
The Messenger congratulates these public servants for their willingness to help shape the future of our community. Their service is much appreciated.
