Sac City: Beautifying sac city

Town makes improvements, prepares to host ragbrai in 2021

SAC CITY — Despite a global pandemic, Sac City did not slow down during 2020, said Mayor Scott Bundt.

“We got a lot done and we’ve got a lot to do,” he said.

A lot of the work that’s been done is visible across the whole city.

“We’ve got about 99% of the new street signs up and we’ve got all new way signs and church signs,” Bundt said. “We’ve converted every pole in town to bronze aluminum poles, so every pole in town that carries a sign has been replaced and updated.”

The city also installed new welcome banners for every season.

These updates and other efforts to improve the look and feel of the city have been a priority for Sac City for the past several years.

Funding for the beautification initiative is thanks in large part to a trust fund left by the late John Criss, a local businessman and owner of Chief Clothing Co. who left $5.7 million to the city after his death in May 2015.

In his remembrance, he has done much of the same thing he enjoyed doing during his life: making Sac City look good.

These updates include a reimagining of the town’s east entrance, which will be complete this spring, the mayor said, adding that it’s mainly landscaping and installing some artwork left to do.

When it gets warmer in the spring, the city will be doing some landscaping around the VFW hall, the mayor said.

Recently, new colored LED lighting was installed on the Sac County Courthouse, which will allow the courthouse to be lit up at night.

The town recently hired a professional to build a new website, saccity.city, Bundt said.

“It’s very user-friendly and quite nice to get on and look at,” he said.

More improvements Sac City will be working on this year, Bundt said, include refurbishing the Chautauqua building.

“We’re going to bring it up to speed,” he said. “Tear out the concrete inside and pour new concrete. Right now it’s really cracked and uneven.”

The largest project the city is working on currently is remodeling the lounge at the Sac City Airport.

“We completely gutted it,” Bundt said. “New furnace, new air (conditioning), new kitchen, new bathroom, new furniture. It’s going to be a really nice airport lounge, welcoming any air traffic to town.”

They’re also helping the airport spruce up the mechanic shop, he added.

Sac City will also be doing a “significant sewer project” on Ninth Street sometime during 2021, but Bundt said the exact timing hasn’t been established yet.

In July, for the first time ever, Sac City will host an overnight stop for RAGBRAI.

“This will be a bit of a learning curve and probably a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it,” Bundt said.
