Laurens-Marathon Community Schools: tomorrow’s workforce

L-M, Iowa Central partner to create Northwest Iowa Career Education Academy

LAURENS — There’s a new facility in Laurens at the high school to help meet the area’s need for skilled labor.

It’s the Northwest Iowa Career Education Academy, and it’s a partnership with Iowa Central Community College and the Laurens-Marathon School District.

Tom Grau, executive director of the Pocahontas County Economic Development Commission, said there’s a great need for the Academy.

“We need workforce throughout this whole area,” he said. “Industry has been clamoring for workforce. Jobs are plentiful, but workforce is short.”

Inside the facility, there’s high tech equipment, labs and classrooms designed to help students develop modern manufacturing skills. Students who know their technology are highly desired by employers.

“The manufacturing industry in the area is facing an urgent need for highly trained technicians,” he said.

The Academy will not just partner with the schools in the area. Its educational programs are also available to adults.

The partnership with the school district and Iowa Central benefits everyone.

“Absolutely,” Grau said. “Not only Laurens but also area schools too.”

“The Career Academy will focus on providing classes to boost manufacturing skills and workforce readiness for individuals who are currently working in the manufacturing industry or strive to pursue a career in the field,” he said.

Dan Kinney, president of Iowa Central, is looking forward to seeing it in action.

“We are looking forward to the numerous ways the facility will serve the needs of the communities and businesses in northwest Iowa,” he said. “The Career Academy will strive to enhance the skill set of the workforce in the area with various classes and certifications that are planned for the future. We are excited to see the impact that it will have.”

The Academy has already produced results.

“The inaugural Integrated Manufacturing Advancement Program was held at the Academy from September through December,” Grau said. “It graduated three students on Dec. 17.”

There’s more coming up.

“A production welding certification course is currently in session through April 1,” he said.
