Something’s off about Elizabeth Warren

Ed Rendell recently whacked Elizabeth Warren when she bashed Joe Biden for taking rich donors’ money. The former Pennsylvania governor wrote that he himself had run a “swanky” fundraiser for Warren’s Senate race, for which she thanked him royally. Furthermore, she transferred $10.4 million of her big-money hauls into her presidential campaign while bragging that she was only accepting small donations. Calling that maneuvering sleazy would be overdoing it, but there is certainly something untoward about it. Warren refuses to say what taxes she would raise to cover her ...

The best has yet to come

Dear Annie: I am a very lucky 67-year-old. I have a job I enjoy every day, a happy marriage, wonderful children and grandchildren, and my health is excellent. I also know that, life being what it is, I am likely to be dead or at least confined to an assisted living center in a decade. I’ve had a great life and am ready for death, if that is what comes next. Residing in an assisted living center is what scares me. Being confined to a small space with other old people, watching television or playing cards all day while hoping for a visitor who sees it as a chore to visit me and ...

No new edition of ‘Profiles in Courage’

Then-Sen. John F Kennedy wrote admiringly in his 1955 book, “Profiles in Courage,” about Republican U.S. Sen. Edmund G. Ross of Kansas. In 1868, in a decision Ross knew would end his political career, he broke with his party to vote against the impeachment of then-President Andrew Johnson, the Tennessee Democrat who had succeeded the martyred Abraham Lincoln. By Ross’s lone vote, the Republican Senate failed to convict and remove President Johnson. But Ross, who would never again win an election, understood what the vote meant for his own fate: “I almost literally looked down ...

Angry Fred ruins friendly gatherings

Dear Annie: There is a family in our congregation, “Fred” and “Wilma,” who have two kids who are the same age as ours. My wife is friends with Wilma, and the kids all get along well. The problem is Fred. He’s a fat jerk. We’ve known them for six years, and I work at the same company as him. However, I got promoted faster thanks to my working like a horse. He’s an extremely jealous man and loves to make stupid comments about my work, right in front of people in social situations, even though I rarely talk about my job. I grin and bear it. But he also makes stupid comments ...

Can no longer hear the call

Dear Annie: Having been a registered nurse for the past 40 years, I have seen many changes in health care. I believe that nursing is a calling and not just a career. In my initial, youthful bliss, I took great joy in helping people in their hour of need. Patients and families were grateful and appreciative for every little thing that was done for them. These days, young nurses are leaving their jobs at an alarming rate. This is because they are faced with budget cuts and unrealistic expectations of providing patient care with half the staff. Nursing is now a frustrating, unhappy and ...
