Bears, Mustangs play for title spots

DES MOINES — The last time Bishop Garrigan and Newell-Fonda squared off in the girls state tournament was for the Class 1A championship in 2023.

Audi Crooks and Molly Joyce led the Golden Bears to their second consecutive title with a 68-57 victory as Crooks scored a tournament-record 49 points with 16 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Should both the Golden Bears and Mustangs secure wins here Friday in the semifinals, they would square off inside Casey’s Center for the state title once more.

Top-ranked and No. 1 seed Bishop Garrigan (23-2 overall) plays Dunkerton (23-2) at 1:30 p.m. followed by No. 2 Newell-Fonda (23-2) meeting defending state champion Council Bluffs St. Albert (22-3) in a rematch of last year’s double-overtime classic.

Behind a 24-point, 14-rebound, seven-steal, four-block performance by Graclyn Eastman on Wednesday, Bishop Garrigan ousted Kee, 64-42. Sacha Alesch and Emmi Bartolo added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Both Alesch and Bartolo were rotation players during the last Golden Bear team to win a state title. They also combined for seven assists, six rebounds and three steals in the quarterfinals.

Dunkerton knocked off previously-unbeaten Lynnville-Sully in the elite eight, 60-39, advancing to the semifinals for the second time in school history. The other appearance came in 2008 when they lost to Newell-Fonda.

The Raiders forced 19 turnovers and had 15 steals vs. Lynnville-Sully, as Ava Fuelling finished with 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Hailey Kipp had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

It was business as usual for the Mustangs in their first state game, as they downed Saint Ansgar, 77-58. Dick Jungers and Newell-Fonda have won 13 consecutive quarterfinal round games and are a win away from an eighth finals trip in nine years.

Ellie Sievers scored 18 points, Quinn Sievers had 17 and Rylee Hogrefe finished with 12.

The final quarterfinal contest saw St. Albert get by Exira-EHK, 45-37. Avah Underwood, the star of the title team, had 11 points and 17 rebounds, as Brooklyn Rutledge, Eleanor Coughlin and Maeve Ryan combined for 25.

One of those key pieces from a year ago, Maura Ryan, was lost for the season to a knee injury in the opener.

Starting at $4.94/week.
