No. 4 Gaels throttle Indians

There was absolutely no looking ahead by the fourth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys here Thursday night.

Ahead of a showdown with No. 7 (3A) Clear Lake on Friday, the Gaels made sure to put Pocahontas Area away early, claiming a 95-55 victory.

Hunter Horn scored 33 points and Carson Bargfrede added 19, as the senior duo recorded 18 in the first quarter alone. St. Edmond (17-2 overall) has now won seven in a row and 10 of 11.

For the Indians (9-9), Karson Welander scored 27.

“We talked before the game about making sure to come out, play defense and attack,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “I thought we did a great job of that. We got a little out of sorts in the second, but we came back in the third stuck to the plan.”

Jakob Koopman had a double-double, scoring 10 points with 10 rebounds and four steals, Grant Galles joined him in double figures with 10 points and had six rebounds, and Jack McElroy dished out nine assists.

“I thought we did a great job of passing up good shots for even better ones,” Kochendorfer said. “Hunter for instance, did a tremendous job of making that extra pass and getting a great look at the basket.”

Pocahontas Area scored the opening bucket before St. Edmond went on a 20-0 run. They led by 28 after the first quarter and were ahead 56-26 at the break.

The Gaels have now won seven in a row over the Indians and lead the series 11-6 since 2008.

Back in early January, Clear Lake used a late fourth quarter surge to claim a 62-48 victory. The Lions have lost just once this season to 4A Dallas Center-Grimes.
