Diedrick into semifinals

Four Algona girls still alive on the championship side

CORALVILLE — Danica Diedrick’s mindset heading into the state wrestling tournament was simple: have fun first, and everything else would take care of itself.

Diedrick (36-3) did exactly that and now finds herself in Friday’s Class 1A 170-pound semifinals.

In her third state tournament appearance, the Humboldt junior is now on the podium. She’s hoping to reach the top step inside Xtreme Arena, though.

“I just went in with the goal of having fun,” Diedrick said. “And I had a lot of fun while wrestling.”

Diedrick, who is 110-30 in her career, pinned Megyn Hollingsworth (42-10) of BCLUW in 4:53 of the opening round.

“Danica wrestled hard in both matches,” said Humboldt head coach Andy Newell. “She was calm under pressure and stuck to the game plan.

“She accomplished the first part of her goal, and now (Friday) we start the second part.”

In the quarterfinals, Diedrick knocked off 12th-seed Stella Beattie (29-4) of SWAT in 1:31. Beattie upset fifth-seeded Raelene Hawkins of Iowa Valley in her opener.

Now, the Humboldt junior will face top seed Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez (46-2) of West Liberty in the semis.

“It means a lot to still be on the championship side of the bracket,” Diedrick said. “Especially because of how this tournament went for me last year.

“After winning in the quarters, I just felt a huge wave of accomplishment. My goal this year was to be on the podium, and that’s when I locked it in.”

No. 12 Humboldt junior Laina Dettmann (35-10) fell by an 11-1 major decision to Hannah Brandhorst (46-5) of Woodward-Granger.

Dettmann bounced back with a fall in 2:23 over Sadie Clarahan of Sigourney-Keota. Dettmann was eliminated from the tournament, though, with a tough 7-4 loss to Makenna Kurth (43-8) of Waukon.

Kohnen lost by fall in 1:32 of the first round to Macie Little (44-3) of North Mahaska, but bounced back with a fall in 2:49 over Gracie Shelton of Oelwein.

Kohnen was eliminated by fall in 57 seconds to Alexa Heflin (39-4) of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.

Kramer, the No. 7 seed, will now face fifth-seeded Amya Bass (41-4) of Davenport Assumption.

Southeast Valley students Goldie Davis (100) and Meia Hefley (135) were eliminated from the field, but both won one state match.

After losing her opener, Davis (45-13) — a freshman — pinned Sawyer Rusthon (35-9) of West Branch in 4:25 before dropping a tight 12-11 decision to Brystol Wiley of Van Buren County (31-6).

To close her junior campaign, Hefley (42-15) lost her opener by fall, pinned Josslyn Holladay of Wilton in 2:52, but was eliminated in her next match.

Fifth-seed Paytn Haack (44-7) won her 145-pound opening-round match by pinning Taya Metzger of Central Lyon-George Little Rock in 4:53. She then lost by pin, but stayed alive in the tournament with a fall in 46 seconds over Emma Dietsch (37-8) of Lisbon.

Haack will now face 10th-seeded Kelly Throndson (40-9) of New Hampton Turkey Valley.

Eighth-seeded sophomore Taylor Thayer (42-8) prevailed in a tight 1-0 decision over Josie Lennon of Akron-Westfield. She then lost by fall and dropped a tight 3-2 decision to Remington Wadsworth to be eliminated.
