Emmetsburg advances; North Union ousted

For the first time since 1999, the Emmetsburg girls are headed to the state basketball tournament.
The fifth-ranked E-Hawks claimed a 64-43 victory over No. 14 Maquoketa Valley on Wednesday night at Hampton in a Class 2A regional final.
With the win, Emmetsburg (23-2 overall) will now take on fourth-rated Denver (22-2) in Des Moines from the Casey’s Center on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
Kylie Hoffman scored a game-high 19 points to lead the E-Hawks, who turned a 34-18 halftime lead into a 20-point advantage heading to the fourth. Dylan Fiene added 18 points and Rachel Schany chipped in 12.
Emmetsburg sank 13 three-pointers, including seven in the second half. Fiene had four of those triples.
Maquoketa Valley (19-5) was led by sophomore Audra Burbridge’s 16 points.
Denver advanced with a 50-28 victory over No. 13 Cascade.
In Webster City, No. 13 North Union suffered a 56-33 loss to fifth-ranked Lynnville-Sully.
The Warriors (15-9) had posted postseason wins over West Hancock and Meskwaki Settlement to advance. They were seeking their first state appearance since 2018.
North Union does not graduate a single player from a team that earned the seventh straight season with at least 15 wins. The Warriors have won at least 10 games each of the past 13 seasons.
Lynnville-Sully (24-0) now heads to Des Moines and the Casey’s Center for 1A state tournament action against sixth-ranked Dunkerton (22-2) on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
