Dodgers can’t stop Tornadoes

The Fort Dodge boys matched the energy and intensity top-ranked (Class 3A) Storm Lake brought to the Dodger gym in the early going on Thursday.
From there, it was all Tornadoes.
Even without superstar Jaidyn Coon, Storm Lake ran away with a 79-28 victory by dominating the final three quarters on both ends of the court.
The Tornadoes, who improved to 15-2 overall on the season, shot 62 percent from the field and held Fort Dodge to just three baskets total over the last three periods of play in proving they are about more than just their superstar Creighton University recruit.
Much more.
Senior Cameron Boyd showed he was capable of picking up the slack without Coon, a three-star recruit who chose head coach Greg McDermott’s Bluejays over Iowa, Iowa State and a host of other Division I schools. The 6-foot-6 Coon wasn’t in uniform last night and had his foot in a walking boot.
Storm Lake wasn’t fazed. Boyd displayed a wide variety of skills from his repertoire, scoring 24 points in the first half alone and finishing with 29 after limited second-half action.
Boyd, a future Briar Cliff University basketball player who is averaging over 18 points per game this season, was one of three Tornadoes in double figures. Junior Trey Boettcher drilled six three-pointers — all in the second and third quarters — for 18 points, and senior Garbieno Weno added 12.
The Dodgers awakened after falling behind 9-0 and 17-8, scoring eight of the final 12 points in the opening frame to get within 21-16. Seniors Tytrell Mosley and Hayden Zuspann both knocked down two triples in the period.
Fort Dodge hit a wall both physically and emotionally from there, as Storm Lake started the second quarter with a 23-2 knockout punch. The Tornadoes then had a 15-2 burst out of the locker room for good measure as the score got out of hand.
“The effort just wasn’t there — at least, not on the level it needs to be against a team like that,” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “With or without Coon, they’re used to winning. The Boyd kid is legit. He’s as good as anyone we’ve seen (this season).
“You’ve got to go all-out when you’re facing the No. 1 team. They out-worked us. We weren’t getting stops and weren’t rebounding the ball. We were going through the motions for the most part.”
The Dodgers were just 10 of 43 from the field, including a 6-for-31 effort from two-point range.
The Tornadoes, meanwhile, made 11 of 18 attempts from behind the arc alone in winning for the 37th time in their last 41 games dating back to the start of last year.
Before Thursday, Coon had played in all but two of the program’s 82 contests dating back to his freshman year. He recently became the school’s first-ever 1,500-point scorer.
