Newell-Fonda girls take over No. 1 spot in 1A

It has been a very eventful 24 hours for the Newell-Fonda girls.

One night after knocking off defending and top-ranked Class 1A state champion Council Bluffs St. Albert, the Mustangs replaced the Saintes atop the latest rankings.

Newell-Fonda, which fell to St. Albert in the finals a year ago, posted a 51-47 victory in Council Bluffs on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs moved from No. 3 to No. 1, as Bishop Garrigan jumped one spot to second followed by St. Albert.

“This was a great atmosphere for a game,” Newell-Fonda head coach Dick Jungers said. “This was a tough battle for four quarters. I felt our kids came out with great energy and they played hard.

“We did a nice job of contesting shots and we were able to knock down some open 3s throughout the game that was the difference.”

Rylee Hogrefe had 18 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the victory to lead Newell-Fonda. Ellie Sievers and Quinn Sievers both scored 10 points, as Jocee Walsh had nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

The Mustangs return to Twin Lakes Conference play this Friday night when they travel to West Bend-Mallard.

“I’m proud of how our girls fought through some tough situations throughout the game and made enough plays to get a road win against a really good team,” Jungers said. “It was great that we had a lot of different players step up and that is exactly what this team needed.”

Along with the Golden Bears, North Union remained 15th in 1A.

Rock Valley moved to the top in 2A, replacing Treynor, who fell from No. 1 down to seventh. Emmetsburg dropped one spot to ninth in 2A this week.

The other No. 1 ranked teams are Maquoketa (3A), Clear Creek-Amana (4A) and Johnston (5A).

Starting at $4.94/week.
