St. Edmond wrestlers head to Clarion

CLARION — The St. Edmond wrestling team will see two of the best programs in the state Thursday night on the mat.

The Gaels take on second-ranked (Class 2A) Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, No. 1 (1A) Don Bosco and Charles City in a quadrangular beginning at 6 p.m.

On Tuesday night, the Dons made history, becoming just the second high school in Iowa to win 1,000 duals. Don Bosco topped both No. 2 (3A) West Des Moines Dowling and Creighton Prep, one of the top teams in Nebraska.

Last year, the Dons swept the 1A state duals and traditional team titles.

This past weekend, St. Edmond posted its first dual win under head coach Kaden McClintock with a 48-30 victory over Sioux City West. Both Matthew Crimmins and Nick Utley went 4-0 on the day, as Jace Stanley and Evan Knox each finished 3-1.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows dropped a dual to Decorah at the Glenn Brand Invitational this past Saturday. The Cowboys boast several ranked wrestlers including Linden Phetxoumphone and Adrian Phetxoumphone.

Ty Martin, Kaiden Belinsky, Hendrix Schwab, Hayden Schwab, Dawson Youngblut, Ethan Christoffer and Kyler Sallis are all ranked No. 1 for Don Bosco.

St. Edmond remains busy this weekend, heading to Marion for the Loyd Shaffer Invitational on Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. The field includes Atlantic, Benton, Blue Valley Northwest (Kan.), Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Grinnell, Jesup, Keokuk, Maquoketa, Marion, Monticello, North Linn, Springville, Williamsburg and Wilton.
