Fort Dodge girls finish fourth at Triton Clash
Progression is key to any young group and the Fort Dodge girls wrestling team is doing it early and quickly.
The Dodgers (5-3 overall) went 3-2 and finished fourth at the Triton Clash, having three wrestlers go unbeaten on Tuesday.
“It was a great performance out of this group,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “Hopefully we can just keep the ball rolling.”
Fort Dodge went undefeated in pool action, then lost twice on the championship side. The Dodgers tied Audubon (42-42) and East Buchanan (42-42), but won both duals on tiebreakers, having the least amount of forfeits.
FDSH knocked off Humboldt, 48-36. Fort Dodge lost to Lewis Central, 60-24, and fell to Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 48-36, in the third place match.
Three-time state senior qualifier Mariaha Benedict (135), freshmen Shayley Butrick (110) and Ava Potter (235) all went 5-0 on the day to remain unbeaten on the season.
Freshman Emma Potter had three key falls for the Dodgers. Potter moved up a weight to compete at 190 in the Audubon dual.
“Emma Potter had a huge day,” Koenig said. “She moved up a weight and got three falls on the day. Her victory over Audubon helped us earn the victory.
“She is the wrestler of the tournament for us. What she did was impressive.”
Potter got the second in a string of three Dodger falls from Tori Jakeman (170) and Ava Potter to force the tie and seal the victory.
Butrick and Benedict had four pins each. All four of Benedict’s were under 20 seconds.
Brooklyn Nelson (115) and Jakeman had three victories, while Adalyn Ford and Ava Osorio had two each.
“The younger group is starting to understand the process,” Koenig said. “I expect nothing but great things from this team.”
