Dodger girls place 2nd at Ridge View

HOLSTEIN — It’s only week one of the girls wrestling season, but Fort Dodge continues to impress.

For the first time at the Ridge View tournament, the Dodgers broke into the Top-10, earning a silver medal.

FDSH scored 138.5 points, with champion Lewis Central tallying 190.5.

“We’ve gone to this tournament since I first started, and this is our highest placing,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “The girls wrestled hard all day and it showed.”

Senior Mariaha Benedict (135 pounds) was joined by freshmen Shayley Butrick (110) and Ava Potter (235) in the winner’s circle for the Dodgers. Benedict (9-0) dominated the field in her four matches, picking up three falls and a tech fall.

Butrick (9-0) continued her hot start to her freshman campaign, winning by fall twice and an 11-4 decision.

“Mariaha did what she does. She dominated,” Koenig said. “She wrestled very aggressively and took care of business.”

Potter (8-0) had two falls to reach the championship match, where she pinned (5:49) Kaylee DeJong of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley — a Class 1A state runner up a year ago.

“Shayley and Ava will be ranked when they first come out with the freshmen,” Koenig said. “Their experience is paying off.”

Sophomore Brooklyn Nelson (6-4) reached the 115-pound semifinals with a pair of falls. She lost in the semifinals and earned a fall in the consolation semifinals before losing in the third-place match.

Ava Osorio (105), Mariana Taute (140), Tori Jakeman (170) and Ky’Mariana Mosley (235) won two matches each.

“Everyone helped. We had three champions, but the girls on the back side helped as well,” Koenig said.

The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they wrestle at the Iowa Central dual tournament. Action begins at 10 a.m. inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Starting at $4.94/week.
