Dodger girls host Early Bird

The Fort Dodge girls wrestling squad had a strong showing at the Fort Dodge Early Bird tournament on Friday.

In their second outing of the week, the Dodgers crowned three champions with three runner ups in the FDSH gym.

The hosts scored 68 team points, placing second behind team champion Algona (132). Boone (59), Des Hoover (34) and Eagle Grove (30) rounded out the field.

Freshman Shayley Butrick (6-0) remained unbeaten, winning three matches — all by fall — at 110 pounds for Fort Dodge.

Three-time state qualifier Mariaha Benedict (135) won both of her matches by fall to improve to 5-0 on the year.

“We had 21 total wins and finished second,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “Butrick, Benedict and (Ava) Potter all went undefeated on the night.

“We wrestled really well against solid competition. I’m excited to see what we do with the schedule next week.”

Potter (235), just a freshman, won both of her matches by fall to move her record to 5-0 on the young season.

Brooklyn Nelson (115), Adalyn Ford (130) and Mariana Tatue (140) all finished second at their respective weights.

Butrick had two falls under 15 seconds and beat Poppy Malone of Boone in 4:28 of her final match. Benedict had a 14-second fall and a 37-second fall.

Potter had two falls in the first period.

Nelson pinned Algona’s Lilly Thompson in 43 seconds, while Ford had a fall in 5:28.

Kyrie Schwering (110), Tatue (140), Tori Jakeman (170) also earned wins for the Dodgers.

Ida Simpson (155) won three junior varsity matches, while Rey Lacina (135/140) and Ky’Mariana Mosley (235) won two each. Gabrielle Wirtz (120), and Mariah Gonzalez (145) also picked up victories.

This was the first home tournament for the Dodgers, who will also host the Fort Dodge girls invitational at the end of December.

“There are a lot of people that helped put this together,” Koenig said. “It was a huge time commitment from (athletic and activities director) Brandon Ruffridge and (assistant) Ryan O’Leary, who helped a lot. Tom McClimon was helping as well.

“I just want to give them thanks for being supportive, as well as Todd Carver, Shane Liska and Sonny Rivera. It’s a big help to have that backing and see their support.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday at the Ridge View Tournament.

Algona had eight girls go undefeated on the evening. Kayle Vicente-Gomez (120), Ruby Roof (125) and Regan Jensen (155) all won three matches each.

Silkee Miller (100), Mara Davis (105), Kiah Villarreal (130), Emmy Owen (145), Lillian Allie (140) and Reagan Haynes (190) were 2-0 for the Bulldogs.

Marlee Thompson (115) prevailed in two matches for Eagle Grove.

Starting at $4.94/week.
