Bishop Garrigan headed back to the UNI-Dome, 51-21

ALGONA — The dominance of Bishop Garrigan football continued here on Thursday night, as the top-ranked Golden Bears secured a spot in the eight-player semifinals for a third consecutive season.

Tate Foertsch ran in three touchdowns and threw a fourth as Garrigan blitzed Don Bosco, 51-21, here at Conway Field.

Awaiting the Golden Bears (11-0 overall) Wednesday in Cedar Falls will be Audubon (11-0), which got past Iowa Valley by a final of 26-19. That game will kick at 10 a.m.

Woodbine (10-0) squares off with Gladbrook-Reinbeck (11-0) in the other semifinal.

The state championship game is Thursday, Nov. 20, in Cedar Falls.

Foertsch, who led Garrigan to a state football title as a sophomore, got the scoring started when he ran a perfectly designed read option, sprinting free for a 64-yard touchdown. He later added TD runs from nine yards and one yard out, finishing the game off with a fourth-and-goal scoring strike to Weston Rosenmeyer.

“What a big, big run by Tate to really set the tone,” BGHS head coach Marty Wadle said. “He made a great read and executed.

“(Don Bosco) is a very good team. I’m just so proud of our kids and our coaching staff for the way they came out and performed.”

Foertsch ran 20 times for 184 yards, and completed all three of his passes for 41 more yards. Ethan Marso added 144 yards on the ground on 24 carries with two scores, including 119 yards in the second half when the Golden Bears wore the Dons (7-3) down.

Last year, Bishop Garrigan reached the semifinals, falling to eventual champion Remsen St. Mary’s when the Hawks scored on a tipped ball in the end zone. The Golden Bears have now gone 34-2 the last three years, losing only to Remsen St. Mary’s and St. Edmond during the 2023 regular season.

CJ McGregor added a late rushing touchdown, breaking free from 15 yards out. Michael Joyce caught two passes, and Madden Miller had a key interception that halted a Don Bosco drive in the red zone and led to a score.

“Madden’s interception really took the wind out of them,” Wadle said. “It gave us an extra possession, and in games like this against a quality opponent, that’s so important.”

Garrigan led 20-14 at the half, as Foertsch ran for 135 yards in the opening 24 minutes alone. After scoring on the long Foertsch run, the Golden Bears put together a 14-play drive that answered an 11-play extended series by the Dons, with Marso ending it with a short scoring run.

In the third quarter, the Garrigan defense held Don Bosco to 33 total yards after allowing 156 in the first half. The Golden Bear offense ran for 114 during that 12-minute stretch alone.

“Our offensive line and tight ends played very physical football,” Wadle said. “Our backs also ran hard and really wore on them as the game went on. Just a great job by those guys getting it done.”

Bishop Garrigan has won 22 consecutive games at home since 2022.

Tucker Youngblut threw for 120 yards and ran for 77 to lead Don Bosco. Ty Christensen caught three passes for 66 yards and ran for 37. Youngblut threw two TD passes and ran in another.
