Bears play for spot in UNI-Dome
ALGONA — The top-ranked Bishop Garrigan football team is one win away from a third consecutive trip to the eight-player semifinals.
The Golden Bears (10-0 overall) host Don Bosco (7-2) here on Thursday night in the state quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Bishop Garrigan delivered head coach Marty Wadle his first state championship in 2023, knocking off Bedford, 39-30, to finish 12-1. They reached the final four a year ago inside the UNI-Dome, dropping a heartbreaker to eventual champion Remsen St. Mary’s, 22-20.
Since going 3-5 in 2022, the Golden Bears have won 33 of 35 overall, losing only to St. Edmond in the 2023 regular season and Remsen St. Mary’s last year.
At the controls of those 33 wins has been quarterback Tate Foertsch, as the senior is completing almost 65 percent of his passes for 1,081 yards and 21 touchdowns to just one interception. He also has 758 yards rushing and 13 more scores.
Classmate Ethan Marso has 1,067 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns while sophomore CJ McGregor adds 533 and 10 on the ground. Junior Michael Joyce has caught 23 passes for 394 yards and seven TDs.
Foertsch, a three-year starter, has 3,548 career passing yards, 58 passing touchdowns, 1,783 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns. He has thrown just four career interceptions while also being a leader on defense.
Don Bosco has not had a losing season since 2010, winning state championships in 2013, ’16, ’17 and ’19. Tucker Youngblut has taken over at quarterback, throwing for 1,122 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 683 and nine.
Ty Christensen has 20 rushing touchdowns and 882 yards, with Vincent Pranger adding 563 yards and 10 more scores. Christensen also has a team-leading 18 receptions for 404 and seven TDs while Pranger has 16 catches for 380 and nine touchdowns.
On defense, the Dons have recorded 12 sacks, 60 tackles for loss and forced 11 turnovers, as Christensen and Alex Belew each have interception returns for scores.
The state semifinals for eight-player take place Wednesday, Nov. 12, with the championship game scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20.
In the other quarterfinals, Fremont-Mills (8-2) takes on Woodbine (9-0), Edgewood-Colesburg (10-0) plays Gladbrook-Reinbeck (10-0) and Audubon (10-0) meets Iowa Valley (10-0).
