Tritons cruise in postseason opener
The Iowa Central women’s soccer squad was all business by design in its Region XI opener on Saturday at home against North Iowa Area Community College.
The 16th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Tritons (11-5 overall) left no doubt three weeks after a precarious regular-season victory over the Trojans, rolling to an 8-0 mercy-rule win. Head coach Jordan Sibenaller’s team will now face Northeast (8-8-2) on the road in a semifinal match on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Norfolk, Neb.
“I was happy to see our girls show up in a big way for our first postseason game,” Sibenaller said. “It was actually the first time this year we’ve had all 11 starters (healthy and) in the lineup (together).
“Although we beat NIACC 1-0 (during the regular season), our players wanted to show that we were much better than we (were) that (day).”
Karma McMorris recorded two goals and three assists to help pace the relentless Iowa Central attack. McKenna Hilton (three goals) and Sydney Hagen (two assists) were also key players in the rout, while Alexandrea Villalobos scored twice. Briana Shannon contributed the other goal.
All eight Iowa Central scores came in the first half.
The Tritons dropped a 6-0 decision to Northeast during the regular season on Sept. 20. The Hawks advanced with an 8-0 victory over Dakota County on Saturday.
“We are excited for our match against Northeast,” Sibenaller said. “It’s another opportunity for our girls to show what we can do when we’re playing our best.”
