Cougars earn district crown

Manson Northwest Webster goes back-to-back

MANSON — Four weeks ago, Mason Northwest Webster head coach Zach Noffsinger was hoping to see his Cougars buy into the system and culture that the 2024 Class 1A, District 2 champions had created.

On the same spot where last year’s group locked up a district title for the first time in 30 years, the Cougars made it two in a row, running their current win streak to five straight with a high-octane 31-14 victory over South Central Calhoun.

“We got a new system going with our offense at the start of district play, and this team started to believe they could accomplish what last year’s group did,” Noffsinger said. “This is a very coachable group, and I am so proud of them for gaining our second straight district title.”

Fueled by the arms and legs of junior quarterback Coy Moline, the home squad got going quickly in front of a large crowd.

Moline found the end zone from 10 and 24 yards out in the opening half — with the second score capping a 99-yard drive — while the Cougars’ defense turned away the Titans offense at each turn.

Manson Northwest Webster (5-2 overall, 4-0 in the district) upped its lead to 20-0 in the third frame, as Moline busted loose off the left side and rambled 68 yards for a touchdown, part of a 23 carry, 222-yard rushing performance.

Moline did not stop there in propelling MNW to its ninth consecutive district win.

He also fired three lasers, two of which were caught for 96 yards to help keep the MNW offense rolling.

“Coy is just a playmaker,” Noffsinger said. “We knew what he was capable of because we saw it last year. He has stepped up in so many ways this year.”

The visiting SCC (3-4, 2-2) squad had several highlights, too.

Sophomore quarterback Cade Higgins fired for nearly 300 yards through the air, closing with 293.

Fellow sophomore Cooper Nattress, joined Higgins in the offensive backfield, finding paydirt twice as part of a team-leading seven rushes for 38 yards.

The two teams wrap up regular-season action this Friday.

Manson Northwest Webster travels to South Hamilton. SCC makes a short trip to Pocahontas Area.

Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
