Tough tasks ahead for Algona, Humboldt

In Week 1, high school football teams got to see if what they did in practice translated to success on the field.
Heading into Week 2, there have been tweaks and repetitions while working on weaknesses and strengths.
Algona (1-0 overall) got off to a good start with a big win over last year’s Class 2A state runner-up in Spirit Lake (0-1). Now, the Bulldogs will meet another perennial state playoff team in Carroll Kuemper (1-0).
The Wildcats (1-0), who reached the Class 3A state championship in 2024, will also face a playoff team, hosting Clear Lake (1-0).
Southeast Valley (1-0) had a big win against Manson Northwest Webster (0-1), which was a playoff contender a year ago. On Friday, the Jaguars will host Emmetsburg (1-0).
With a victory over Lake Mills (0-1) last week, Eagle Grove (1-0) has already equaled their win total from last season.
This marks the first time since 2017 Eagle Grove opened the season with a win. The last time the Eagles have won two consecutive games was in 2022.
Manson Northwest Webster (0-1) will look to get back on track Friday as the Cougars travel to Mapleton and meet MVOCOU (1-0).
Carroll Kuemper (1-0) at Algona (1-0)
The Bulldogs opened the season with a 33-21 victory over the Indians a week ago. Now, they’ll have another tough contest against the Knights.
Algona quarterback Nathan Manske had an efficient night in the opener, going 9-for-12 (75 percent) for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Taevyn Zinnel for an 8-yard strike and Evan Allie for a 52-yard score. Allie had five grabs for 84 yards.
William Weichert was the groundhog for the Bulldogs, toting the ball 24 times for 224 yards. He jaunted 87 yards to paydirt for the main highlight.
Manske ran for 58 yards and a 15-yard touchdown.
Kuemper knocked off Cherokee Washington 44-28 behind 528 yards of total offense. Brock Badding was 18-for-32 passing for 314 yards and two touchdowns. He threw a 34-yard touchdown strike to Braxton Bonnahme and an 11-yard score to Ryan Lucas.
Brayton Alford caught seven balls for 137 yards.
On the ground, Jarin Hoffman carried the ball 35 times for 199 yards and three trips to the end zone.
Clear Lake (1-0) at Humboldt (1-0)
Humboldt got off to a great start on opening night, earning a 35-13 victory over Spencer. The Wildcats had 308 yards of total offense, scoring from four facets of the game.
Jackson Flaherty threw for 112 yards and a 66-yard touchdown strike to twin brother Chase Flaherty, who had two grabs for 93 yards.
Cash McIntire was the groundhog, carrying the ball 12 times for 100 yards and three touchdown with a long of 58.
Nash Palmer recovered a fumble and returned it 44 yards for a score. The Wildcats forced four turnovers.
Clear Lake had 423 yards of offense in their 69-0 win over Forest City. Quarterback Jaxson McIntire was 9-for-10 passing for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He connected twice with Kolby Hodnefield. Hodenfield had five catches for 136 yards.
On the ground, Sam Dodge had seven totes for 71 yards and four touchdowns with a long of 26. Dwight Jones had a 50-yard trip to the end zone, and MJ Otto scored from seven yards out.
This is the 10th meeting since 2008 between the two teams. In that stretch, the Wildcats have won four games – including the last three.
Emmetsburg (1-0) at Southeast Valley (1-0)
Southeast Valley showed early signs of a great passing attack in a 34-13 win over last year’s playoff qualifier, Manson Northwest Webster.
Now on the docket is another 2024 playoff qualifier in Emmetsburg, which beat Estherville-Lincoln Central in its opener, 27-7.
This is the first time since 2022 the two teams have met. The Jaguars won in both 2021 and ’22.
Against the Cougars, Southeast Valley’s Mason Bahr and Casey Hanson both threw for over 100 yards. Bahr was 10-for-19 for 130 yards and a touchdown. Hanson was 3 of 4 for 109 and three scoring strikes.
Logan Jaeschke, The Messenger area athlete of the week, grabbed seven balls for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Bryce Harrison had six catches for 123 yards and a 69-yard TD.
On the ground, Drew Temple had a one-yard touchdown.
Jaeschke and Colin Johnson both had interceptions.
The E-Hawks ran for 359 yards against the Midgets, but did not complete a pass. Brayden Yates had 25 totes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Brennan Hasbrouck went for 107 and Tyce Jennings had a 20-yard trip to the end zone.
Ogden (1-0) at Eagle Grove (1-0)
This will be the first meeting since 2019 for the Eagles and Bulldogs. Ogden won that game, 59-0. Eagle Grove has won four of the last six matchups.
Last week, the Eagles beat Lake Mills. Ogden earned an 18-0 win over Perry.
In their victory, the Eagles ran for 194 yards and threw for 119. Trenton Robinson had 22 carries for 100 yards.
Adrian Whipple had nine totes and two touchdowns. Whipple was 3-for-9 passing and connected with Gavin Pedersen for a 46-yard scoring strike. Pedersen had three grabs for 119 yards.
Ogden quarterback CeJay Jones was 27-for-41 passing for 246 yards and an 11-yard touchdown to Weston Sundell. Treyton Mitchell had five grabs for 96 yards.
Cayden Dudley had a three-yard touchdown jaunt.
Manson Northwest Webster (0-1) at MVOCOU (1-0)
The Cougars will look to break into the win column against an MVOCOU team that beat Missouri Valley 41-6 last week.
This is the third straight meeting between the two, with the Rams winning both of the previous matchups.
Against the Jaguars, the Cougars had a strong run game plan, carrying the ball 41 times for 184 yards. Coy Moline had 18 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns with a long of 15. Tegan Thoma ran for 39 yards.
For the Rams, Manny Cameron had 24 carries for 211 yards and four touchdowns. The longest of the night was from 15 yards out.
Caden Schmidt had a one-yard touchdown plunge. Schmidt was 8-for-22 passing for 137 yards, including a 13-yard scoring strike to Bram Bielenberg.
