Iowa Central in action-packed invite
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The ninth-rated Iowa Central volleyball team competed in one of the toughest regular season tournaments in the country here on Friday and Saturday.
Along with wins against Allen and Labette, the Tritons battled with No. 1 Cowley County and the host, second-ranked Kansas City-Kansas.
“We went into this weekend knowing we had a hard lineup ahead of ourselves,” ICCC head coach Sara Horn said. “Not just against No. 1 Cowley and No. 2 KCK at their place, but also against a good Allen squad (who is receiving votes) and an athletic Labette team that we battled against a few weeks ago.”
On Friday, Iowa Central dropped a four-set match to Kansas City-Kansas. The Tritons rebounded with a sweep over Allen County.
Shirley Monaghan had 10 kills and Meah McCaleb 14 digs vs. Kansas City-Kansas. Talya Sampson recorded 22 kills vs. Allen County and McCaleb had 25 digs.
Anabel Seaman also dished out 34 assists in the win, as Monaghan chipped in 12 kills and 17 digs.
“We unfortunately had our worst match of the weekend vs. KCK,” Horn said. “We would have liked to have that one back. We regrouped and settled our ball handling back down and played well against Allen and Labette.
“Our first set against Cowley is the best we’ve played this season. The girls played with so much energy and fire, and that’s exactly what we have to do all the time. We talked about being able to maintain that for three sets in a row, and that is what we’ll continue to keep working on.”
The Tritons topped Labette in four and were swept by Cowley. McCaleb had 23 digs vs. Labette and Sampson 20 kills while Seaman picked up 40 assists.
Monaghan had 10 kills, Seaman 24 assists and McCaleb 13 digs vs. Cowley.
Iowa Central heads to Mason City to face North Iowa Area in ICCAC action Wednesday before competing against Neosho County and East Central in Boone on Friday and Sauk Valley and Prairie State in Cedar Rapids on Saturday.
